Brand strategy and marketing strategy aren’t interchangeable terms for the same thing. One is the blueprint of who the f*ck you are, and the other is how you show it off to the world. Most businesses muddle the two and end up with campaigns that look alright but don’t actually stick. Or worse – they throw marketing dollars into a black hole with zero return. Not a good look 👀.
This article is no fluff, no bull (as always) and spells out the real difference. We’re here to show you clarity on how brand strategy sets your foundation, how marketing strategy builds on it, and how to make them work together like a sh*thot double act.
And if you didn’t already know – we’re co&co, a marketing agency that knows how to nail both brand strategy and marketing strategy. So let’s go 👇
Brand DNA: This is the essence of who you are as a business. It’s the non-negotiable core that everything else builds on.
🖤 Mission – Why your brand exists. It’s the reason you get out of bed and do what you do every day. So it’s worth asking: what change are you here to make? What’s different about your brand? Why should someone choose you? Your mission is your purpose. It should make your team proud, your audience curious, and your competitors sh*t scared. A good mission statement has guts. It draws a line in the sand and says, “this is what we give a f*ck about, and this is what we’re here to change.”
🖤 Vision – Where you’re heading. Think big. What do you wanna be famous for? That’s your vision. It’s your future-focused ambition. It’s not about what you do today – it’s the future you’re building, the legacy you’re chasing, the dent you want to leave in the universe. This is what people buy into – the journey, the dream, the belief that your brand is heading somewhere worth following.
🖤 Values – Your brand’s moral compass. The rules you live by. And we don’t want to see any of the corporate fluff like "integrity" or "synergy.’’ We need to see the guts behind your brand – the real, gritty beliefs that drive how you work and make decisions.
🖤 Tone of voice – Your personality in words. Whether you're up for having a laugh, or you’re cutting, cool, caring … your tone needs to be consistent. It’s how your brand speaks in emails, ads, socials, pitch decks and yes, even out-of-office replies. It’s what you say, what you don’t say, and how you say it.
Are you straight-talking or poetic? Warm or dry? Do you swear a little (or a lot, like us 👋)? Your tone is what makes people feel something, remember you, and trust that you’re the same brand wherever they find you. It sets the vibe and people buy into those vibes. Especially when there’s consistency there.
🖤 Brand proposition – Your bold AF promise to the people you serve. This is what sets you apart from everyone else. This goes beyond what you do, this your brands answer to ‘why should anyone give a sh*t about you?’.
Then in order to build your brand strategy, we move onto these next areas:
🖤 Competitor & industry research – If you don’t know what everyone else is doing, how the f*ck are you going to stand out? It makes sense to dig into your market and beyond to see how others talk, look, and position themselves. Who’s playing safe? Who’s shouting loud but saying nothing? Who’s actually got it nailed? Then we deliberately make sure your brand sounds nothing like them and everything like you. That’s the whole point because the goal is to dominate your lane. And you can’t do that if you’re copying anyone else.
Too many brands claim they’re “inspired” by others, but what they really mean is, we’d quite like to copy them. That’s lazy. And it’s obvious. We don’t do rip-offs. We find the gaps, the white space, the angles no one’s owning yet – and we plant your flag right there. You need to own your story, not recycle someone else’s.
🖤 Brand Values – Worth repeating because too many brands gloss over this. Your values drive culture, tone, behaviour, and how your audience connects with you. We help you define them in a way that actually means something. Not just to you, but to your audience.
🖤 Visual elements & assets – We’re talking the whole thing: logos, colours, typography, iconography, image direction. Anything you want really. This is what makes people recognise you visually. There’s a common theme across everything we discuss here and that’s – consistency and style. This is 100% the MOST important thing you need to nail for your brand. There should be one visual language, one look, one feel. Not six different versions of your logo flying around or ten colour palettes depending on who's making the Instagram post. You can spot a brand a mile off that isn’t sticking to this – they look messy, confused, and completely untrustworthy.
Visual consistency is what makes your brand feel solid. Legit. Like you’ve got your sh*t together. And when everything looks cohesive, that’s when the trust starts to build. Because people trust what they recognise. So yeah, this is hands-down one of the most important parts of brand strategy.

This is strategic branding. Remember, why you are here … to build a brand. Every single one of these deliverables gives your team the tools to stay consistent, sound spot on, and look the part across every single touchpoint. You’re here to create something with meaning, with guts, and with enough backbone to grow, scale, and evolve – without losing who the f*ck you are. Check out our ultimate guide to brand strategy.
Marketing strategy is how you take that mega brand you’ve spent time building and get it in front of the right people. It’s the delivery plan. The route-to-market. The how behind the who-you-are. While brand strategy is the long game, marketing strategy is your day-to-day playbook – it’s what keeps the wheels turning and the dollars flowing.
It’s short-to-mid-term, agile, and laser-focused on grabbing attention, creating interest, and converting it into action. Sales, sign-ups, clicks, calls – whatever “action” looks like for your business, this is how you engineer it.
At co&co, we break marketing strategy down into three categories:
Marketing Plans
This is your roadmap. Campaigns, budgets, channels, timelines – laid out and ready to go. Whether you’re planning a launch or scaling an existing brand, this is where you map out your message and how it lands. But a good plan isn’t just built for now – it’s built to stand the test of time.
Strategy Audits
Not getting the results you want? Strategy audits are your brand health check. We dive into your current activity, pinpoint the good, the bad and the ugly, and give you a clear path forward.
Project Management
You’ve got a plan. Now make it happen. Marketing project management helps to manage all the moving parts – creative, content, delivery, performance – so you stay on track and out of the weeds. Whether it’s a one-off campaign or an ongoing marketing programme, we run it like clockwork.
But more than that, we make sure everyone’s rowing in the same direction. When your teams are all aligned under one clear strategy, the impact isn’t just bigger – it’s consistent. No mixed messages. No off-brand moments.
Marketing strategy doesn’t replace your brand strategy – it activates it. It’s how all that careful thinking turns into real-world results. And when it’s done right? That’s when your brand becomes a business driver.
It’s worth talking about ROI-driven marketing here or rather how we redefine ROI. Because here’s the thing: all sales are conversions, but not all conversions are sales. Read that again. Let it sink in. We’ll explain.
Conversions come in different shapes. Someone signing up to your newsletter? That’s a conversion. A visitor spending five minutes on your site? Also a conversion. These touchpoints don’t generate physical ROI immediately – but they are just as important. They move people along the journey. They build interest, nurture trust, and warm up leads. And guess what? They can – and absolutely should – be measured. If you’re ignoring these softer conversions, you’re missing half the picture and all the potential.
Marketing is channel-focused, budget-driven, and metric-hungry. Something we like to say is: If you’re not measuring, you’re not marketing – you’re gambling. You might as well be burning your budget and crossing your fingers.
If anyone tells you, “we can’t measure that” or “we’ll just see how it goes,” sorry but they’re either clueless or full of sh*t 🤷♀️. Because modern marketing is measurable. It has to be.
Whether it's impressions, clicks, conversion rates, or ROI – everything should be tracked, tested, and tweaked. Marketing isn’t magic. It’s a science. And when it’s built on a solid brand foundation, it becomes unstoppable.
👉 Audience targeting
👉 Channel selection (SEO, PPC, email, social, etc.)
👉 Campaign messaging (informed by brand tone)
👉 Budget allocation
👉 KPI and success metrics
And it’s not just internal. Need a hand with SEO, PR, or a new website? We’ll plug in our trusted partners and manage the whole thing for you – no vendor herding, no headaches. Just one point of contact: us. Your campaign, handled from strategy to delivery.
Aspect | Brand Strategy | Marketing Strategy |
Focus | Your brand DNA - your mission, vision, values, tone, proposition. | How you reach people - The tactics, channels, and messages to drive action. |
Timeline | Long-term. A foundation that rarely changes. | Short to medium-term. Flexible, responsive, and often campaign-specific. |
Output | Brand voice, visual identity, tone, values, proposition | Campaign assets, ad copy, email flows, landing pages, social content. |
Measurement | Brand awareness, perception, recognition, audience trust. | Leads, conversions, ROI, engagement metrics, sales uplift. |
Deliverables | Brand DNA, tone of voice guide, brand guidelines, logo suite, messaging framework. | Marketing plan, channel strategy, performance dashboard, budget allocation, KPIs. |
Here’s the deal: brand and marketing strategy aren’t rivals – they’re teammates. But one has to lead. Brand strategy goes first. Always. If you skip it, your marketing turns into tactical guesswork with no real direction.
You can’t sell what you don’t understand. So before you blast out campaigns, you need to know what you are, own your sh*t, and lean into it. Brand strategy sets the direction. Marketing delivers it to the world. No alignment = no results. Simple as that.
🅧 Inconsistent messaging across channels
🅧 Tone or design that shifts depending on who's doing the posting
🅧 Marketing spend that doesn’t translate to meaningful results
🅧 Confused audiences who don’t really “get” what you do
🅧 Internal teams pulling in different directions
🅧 Campaigns that look pretty but feel hollow
When brand strategy and marketing are aligned, everything just works better. Your audience starts to recognise you, trust you more, and (finally) remember you. Your ad spend stretches further because you’re not reinventing the wheel every campaign. Internally, everyone’s on the same page so you’re no longer battling with six different tones in one email thread. And the big one? Your campaigns perform. Because when the message is clear and the execution consistent, ROI becomes a given.
Here’s what we do at co&co (put simply) to make sure everything works as it should. It’s not an easy job and lads, it’s definitely not a DIY job. We’re always straight with you. If something’s broken, we’ll tell you. If your tone’s off, your audience confused, or your budget’s being wasted, we’ll call it out. We are a no fluff, no bull agency, after all.
🛠 Use competitor and industry research to fuel both strategies – so your brand doesn’t sound like everyone else in your sector.
🤝 Involve cross-functional teams from the jump – creative, marketing, leadership, ops. If only one team’s owning the strategy, it’s already half-baked.
🔍 Regularly audit and realign – because things change. Fast. Your strategy needs to evolve with your business, not get stuck in last year’s goals.
🧠 Get clear on your commercial goals upfront – because if we don’t know what success looks like, we can’t build a plan that gets you there.
📊 Let data drive the decisions – not personal taste, ego, or Karen from Accounts’ opinion on logo colours.
📈 Balance short-term wins with long-term brand building – quick results are great, but we’re always playing the long game too.
Your brand strategy defines who you are. Your marketing strategy gets that message out. When the two work in sync, magic happens. Not the fake kind – the kind that drives leads, loyalty and long-term success.
